TREE OF THE MONTH – CAPE ASH TREE

September is the month when South Africans are encouraged to plant the tree of the year. Ekebergia Capensis (Cape Ash) is the South African official tree of 2020.

This evergreen ornamental shade tree is common in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, KZN Coastal Regions, Mpumalanga and parts of Limpopo.

The Cape Ash grows fast to a height of up to 15m and will be suitable for larger gardens. Plant this tree in areas which are not too dry and do not get severe frost. In Spring these trees carry fragrant white flowers and red berries follow. In Autumn birds and small mammals love to eat these berries.

The dense crown provides lovely shade in the hottest summer months and with our climate changing to hotter Summer temperatures, the Cape Ash should be on your list to plant in September provided you have a large garden.
